Spring Transition Style Tips: Dressing for Unpredictability
Although we are nearing the end of March, the start of spring and even early April can pose fashion challenges to a Cleveland girl like me or anyone living in the Northern part of the United States! Although it may be sunny or we wish for warmer days, we can still encounter frosty mornings and evenings, snow showers, and freezing temperatures (there have been many times as a little girl that I covered up my floral dress and white shoes with a thick winter coat on Easter Sunday!). The toeless shoes, short sleeve tops, ankle pants, and sheer fabrics have to sit in our closets and wait. Although we want to dress for spring, we do not want to look ridiculous when it’s snowing and stay weather appropriate. How can we dress for the season and the weather? Here are a few tips I use and have shared this month on Instagram!
1) CLASSIC SILHOUETTES
Despite wanting to dress for spring, at times we may need to resort to a classic outfit that transcends seasons and is ALWAYS appropriate, no matter what the temperature outside. This can consist of black dress pants, basic jeans, blazers, pencil skirts, and classic fabrics and patterns. These outfits do not scream a season but can also consist of items that can keep you warm or keep you weather appropriate.
2) INSPIRATION
When you are stuck and do not know what to wear, grab a weather appropriate item out of your closet and search for looks with it. You can even combine search words, such as black blazer + spring outfit to create an outfit that can incorporate those items for something that is right for the weather outside. I am still a faithful Pinterest girl but do not hesitate to use Google Images or even be inspired by your favorite Instagram ladies and/or bloggers!
3) NEUTRALS
To me, neutrals could technically fall under classic silhouettes, as I think use of neutrals are always timeless. Incorporate blacks, browns, beiges, grays, creams, and whites to create a classic neutral look that does not look likeany specific season!
4) LAYERS
Layers can be key all spring, not just at the outset of the season. Layers allow you to wear spring pieces, like pastel colors, light dresses, or short sleeve tops while layering a warmer item, like a blazer, jacket, cardigan, or v-neck sweater to keep you in line with the weather. The best part is that if your chilly morning turns into a mild day, you can easily shed your layers to cool off!
5) BLOUSES AND CARDIGANS
Although not every early spring day can feel like winter, there may be chilly days that do not consist of cold and snow but are still not warm enough to break out the super spring stuff yet. We often experience this throughout March and even into April. It can be appropriate to wear a lighter sweater or long sleeve blouse in bright colors, pastel colors, or even a lighter, sheer materials. I love cardigans for these types of weather days, and I often turn to the Portofino blouse from Express. This blouse is a lighter, sheer material that can come in a variety of colors and spring prints. it can provide enough coverage and warmth while looking like spring. You can even adjust the length of the sleeves!
6) PASTEL COLORS
Pastel colors ARE spring! If it’s snowing out, you can grab a thicker sweater and still look like spring if it is pastel pink, blue, green, or purple! Stay warm but bring elements of spring by incorporating pastel colors into your look.
7) WHEN IN DOUBT, WEAR BLACK, WHITE, AND RED
The color combo of black, white, and red is my go to when I need to look polished, professional, chic, and sophisticated. I even feel more put together when I wear these combos. It doesn’t matter the season, this is often my go-to and a must for any woman when she needs to look and feel this way, despite the season and the weather!
8) WEAR BRIGHT COLORS!
This got added on at the end, as I can’t believe I did not initially think of bright colors when identifying my spring transition style tips! Although pastel colors are great for spring, nothing beats a pop of a bright or neon color either! Bright colors almost remind me even more of the impending summer season, so there should be no reason why you cannot integrate bright colors into your look to portray a spring and summer-y vibe.
So that wraps up my style tips for spring transition! What do you think? Do you use any of these?! Is there a style tip I missed? I would love to hear in the comments below or on Instagram.
